"Keep Sharp" book by Sanjay Gupta, MD.

Keeping a sharp brain is everything, just ask Sanjay Gupta, MD. He is a neurosurgeon, trusted CNN Emmy Award-winning chief medical correspondent, associate professor of neurosurgery at the Emory University School of Medicine, and a New York Times bestselling author.

In his book, Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age, he uses research, experience, and engagement with scientist to debunk many myths about brain health and provides you with the correct pathway to cognitive longevity.

In chapter 4 “The Miracle of Movement” he starts by saying, “When people ask me what’s the single most important thing they can do to enhance their brain’s function and resiliency to disease, I answer with one word: exercise—as in move more and keep a regular physical fitness routine.” Cardiorespiratory conditioning, which raises your heart rate, and weight training to increase muscle mass, is essential to our overall health. The key is to make the time to exercise and to gradually turn it into a lifestyle habit.

Sanjay goes into the benefits of exercise, and many other important fact-based practices that help advance our brain health. My favorite quote from the book is when he said, …

“Our everyday experiences, including what we eat, how much we exercise, with whom we socialize, what challenges we face, how well we sleep, and what we do to reduce stress and learn, factor much more into our brain health and overall wellness than we can imagine.”

I recommend this book to everyone, because like he says “Physical exercise may offer the greatest return on investment in yourself, and it’s an antidote to many things that play into your risk for decline.”

If you haven’t already, I challenge you to start exercising today, focus on each moment rather then the end goal you set, thank yourself later and stay sharp.*
